A creative dumping ground for issues that interest me personally and professionally, with the thought they may interest you too. Issues such as the business of design, the design of business, the design of objects, design strategy, creative direction, innovation, creativity, thought leadership, observations, as well as recommendations, mid-century modern decorative arts and architecture, and the state of my thinking (and currently the state of my heart).

Tobias: Mendelsund design:related Interview

Blogger and book designer Chris at Outerwearforbooks and Tobias Design has interviewed Knopf's book designer Peter Mendelsund once before, but this time he digs a bit further into this massive talent in an interview exclusively for design:related. It appears Chris will be contributing more like this in the future.

I personally appreciate Chris managing to get this interview. It's one thing to look at someone's work, as much can be learned by studying the work itself. And for people like me who have never worked at a big name company or worked with quote "famous" designers, learning by what I see in other's work has always been insightful. But hearing from them is way different, and as you'll see from Chris's line of questioning, he is uniquely qualified to ask questions in this fashion.

A great interview of a great designer by a great designer.

I'm a Design:Related Featured Designer. Cool.

Design:Related decided to make me one of the Featured Designers today. I don't recall if this is for a day, a week or what exactly, so depending on when you check this out, try here for my feature. Then this one for where my stuff is camped out more regularly. I was invited initially (a.k.a.: LinkedIn Connection Request) to check things out by Chris at Outwear, then decided to take it for a spin myself. It's been fun to work through some of the beta bugs with Matt, and I can see how this site has value into the future and of course I'm betting on Matt and Karen to make their internet millions one of these days. If they do, I am most certainly hoping they won't forget their early adopters and throw us some bones! So check me out, yo.

Salamander Hill Design: David Drummond

Christopher Tobias's blog is one I frequent, but only recently did I find and follow his point to David Drummond's fine book design work–aka Salamander Hill Design. David's work is a special blend of intelligence and clarity. His execution is to the T, and his covers communicate fine tuning and finesse. Bravo to David, the marvelous and mysterious (no profile, background info, or the like as I can tell) book designer from, ugh, Canada? Malone, NY? Oh, nevermind. Just enjoy his work. I did.
