// BarryBlog //

A creative dumping ground for issues that interest me personally and professionally, with the thought they may interest you too. Issues such as the business of design, the design of business, the design of objects, design strategy, creative direction, innovation, creativity, thought leadership, observations, as well as recommendations, mid-century modern decorative arts and architecture, and the state of my thinking (and currently the state of my heart).

Trajan in the Movies. Enough Already.

Since I'm perhaps the last blog to post on the overuse of the font Trajan in the motion picture industry, I thought I would throw in some trivia to have something somewhat original in this post. As for the font Trajan, it was created by Carol Twombly in 1989 for Adobe as part of their Adobe originals collection.. She based it on the inscribed characters from the Trajan column in Rome (AD 113). As you see from this movie, it's way overused.

More on Trajan from Stacy's thesis continuation in romanboldoblique:

The base of Trajan's column featured classic Roman letterforms. It is believed that these letters were first painted, then carved into the stone. This gave them a nice free formed feel and sharper serifs. The letters are called capitalis monumentalis or Roman square capitals.

History lesson complete. Enjoy the movie. You're welcome.

Great Creative: Honest

Contagious is a word that comes to mind after watching this video. The synergy between these two guys is unmistakable. They are cool in that they don't take themselves all super serious like so many people. They also don't claim to know it all, and I love the freedom with which they operate. I really like these guys and hope they continue to rock.

Seam Carving: Next Gen Image Manipulation

My friend Chris tipped me off to an amazing image manipulation algorithm developed by Shai Avidan, who was recently hired by Adobe. He calls this technolgy "Seam Carving for Content-Aware Resizing." The obvious thought then would be that this technology might make it into the CS4 product line. All I can saw is WOW, and I hope so. Check out this video. It becomes gets amazing about midway through. Also, check out John Nock's blog for two more heavyhitters joining the Adobe ranks.

Adobe Inspiration: Stories

Adobe presents stories about how their technology's helping revolutionize how people engage with ideas and information. This is another great micro site on the content rich Adobe family of sites. Their DesignCenter micro site is yet another. One of my interests in producing BarryBlog is to share what I find interesting in the event you do too. These Adobe sites are one's you know about perhaps, but are too busy to pay attention to. Hum...too busy to pay attention. That's something worth discussing in the future.
